She developed false memories of sexual abuse (by me) there, and for now we have lost our daughter to the cult that is Mercy Ministries. Do you have any advice for me and my family???Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9037174417854468491.post-60595427761144718142009-12-09T18:23:21.495-06:002009-12-09T18:23:21.495-06:00It wasn't just you. I had doubts about these ...It wasn't just you. I had doubts about these booklets as well. GCP and GCP for Healing are booklets that contain one man's skewed perspective on how to apply God's Word to our lives. Case in point, "Words are the most powerful things in the universe today!" No, they aren't. God is.

I hope Mercy replaces these books someday, but I doubt they will.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9037174417854468491.post-48909923560568599042009-12-08T13:01:14.404-06:002009-12-08T13:01:14.404-06:00Thank you so much for your comment! To hear my thoughts and feelings put into words by someone else, someone who doesn't even know me.

"It was almost like they believed the book had some magic powers" - YES. That is just what it was like! And I never thought about it, but I think you're right that it could be a form of brainwashing.

From my first link on mind control, over on the left:
4. Thought-stopping techniques (to shut down "reality testing" by stopping "negative" thoughts and allowing only "good" thoughts); rejection of rational analysis, critical thinking, constructive criticism.
a. Denial, rationalization, justification, wishful thinking
b. Chanting
c. Meditating
d. Praying
e. Speaking in "tongues"
f. Singing or humming

I was always thinking, well, chanting, we didn't do that. But isn't that just what GCP is? Chanting these words over and over? Wow. Thank you for pointing that out. And with the above quote - notice how many of those happened at Mercy! I think the only one that didn't, that I can remember, is meditating. Scary.

You are absolutely right, God cares about where our hearts are, not that we repeat some "magic words" over and over.

"But the staff told us that any negative thought or feeling about Mercy is from the devil, and that we should pray against it. If we said anything bad about Mercy they said we were listening to the devil's lies."
YES! And that's why it's so confusing. Because you know it's not right, but you're so isolated there and can't get outside information, so you start believing it. It must be right, because it's what they're teaching, and they know what they're talking about, because this program has helped so many people. They make you feel like you're bad for having any of those negative thoughts, so you try so hard to ignore them or get rid of them. A lot of times, with GCP. There's that brainwashing thing again! "Thought-stopping techniques"! That is exactly what it was!

Ahh, have to get to class! Thanks again for the comment!Gracehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15864338969438346176noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-9037174417854468491.post-1122800415379520852009-12-07T12:45:33.767-06:002009-12-07T12:45:33.767-06:00I totally understand where you're coming from....I totally understand where you're coming from. They made us do GCP every day too. It was almost like they believed the book had some magic powers and that if we said the words enough God would heal us, no matter where our hearts were. I didn't know it at the time, but now looking back on it I think it was a form of brainwashing. There are no magical words that people should say over and over to get healed. God cares about where our hearts are more than that.

I also had the feeling in my stomach that something (well, a lot of things) weren't right at Mercy. But the staff told us that any negative thought or feeling about Mercy is from the devil, and that we should pray against it. If we said anything bad about Mercy they said we were listening to the devil's lies. But I think it was more that God was letting us know that what the staff were doing wasn't a real representation of Him.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
